Past Continuous Tense หรือ “อดีตกาลต่อเนื่อง” ใช้เมื่อต้องการบรรยายสิ่งที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในช่วงเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต มักเน้นความต่อเนื่องของเหตุการณ์ในขณะนั้นกาลนี้ช่วยให้เรื่องราวในอดีตมีชีวิตชีวา เหมือนกำลังเล่า “ฉาก” ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่โครงสร้างประโยคSubject + was/were + Verb-ing

• I / He / She / It → was + V.ing
• You / We / They → were + V.ing

ตัวอย่างพื้นฐาน

• I was sleeping when the phone rang. (ฉันกำลังนอนหลับอยู่ตอนที่โทรศัพท์ดัง)
• They were playing football at 5 p.m. yesterday. (พวกเขากำลังเล่นฟุตบอลเมื่อเวลา 5 โมงเย็นเมื่อวาน)
• She was cooking dinner while her husband was watching TV.

การใช้งานหลักของ Past Continuous Tense

1. เหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ ณ เวลาหนึ่งในอดีต (Action in progress at a specific time in the past)
   มักใช้กับ at 5 p.m., at that time, yesterday morning
   • At 8 o’clock last night, I was studying English.
2. เหตุการณ์สองอย่างเกิดขึ้นพร้อมกันในอดีต (Two actions happening at the same time)
   • While I was driving, she was talking on the phone.
3. เหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น แล้วมีเหตุการณ์อื่นเข้ามาขัด (Interrupted action)
   มักใช้ร่วมกับ Simple Past (when / while / as)
   • I was having dinner when the lights went out.
   • She was walking home when it started to rain.
4. บรรยายฉากหรือบรรยากาศในอดีต (Setting the scene in a story)
   • It was raining heavily. People were running for shelter.
5. พฤติกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นบ่อยในอดีตและมักน่ารำคาญ (Annoying past habits)
   • He was always losing his keys when he was young.

การใช้ Past Continuous Tense ในข่าว (ตัวอย่างที่พบบ่อย)ในข่าวภาษาอังกฤษ มักใช้ Past Continuous เพื่อบรรยายสถานการณ์หรือฉาก ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในขณะที่เหตุการณ์สำคัญเกิดขึ้น (โดยเฉพาะข่าวอาชญากรรม ภัยพิบัติ การเมือง และกีฬา) ทำให้ผู้อ่านเห็นภาพเหตุการณ์ชัดเจนเหมือนกำลังเกิดขึ้นตรงหน้าตัวอย่างที่พบบ่อยในข่าว:

1. ข่าวภัยพิบัติและสภาพอากาศ
   • Residents were sleeping when the earthquake struck at 3 a.m. (ชาวบ้านกำลังนอนหลับอยู่ตอนที่แผ่นดินไหวเกิดขึ้นเมื่อตีสาม)
   • Heavy rain was falling across the city as floodwaters began to rise.
2. ข่าวการเมืองและการประท้วง
   • Thousands of protesters were marching peacefully through the streets when police moved in to disperse the crowd. (ผู้ประท้วงหลายพันคนกำลังเดินขบวนอย่างสงบตามท้องถนน ตอนที่ตำรวจเคลื่อนกำลังเข้ามาสลายการชุมนุม)
   • The Prime Minister was addressing the nation when the power failed suddenly.
3. ข่าวอาชญากรรมและเหตุการณ์ด่วน
   • The victim was walking home alone when the suspect attacked her from behind. (ผู้เสียหายกำลังเดินกลับบ้านคนเดียว ตอนที่ผู้ต้องสงสัยเข้าโจมตีจากด้านหลัง)
   • Witnesses were leaving the building when they heard gunshots.
4. ข่าวกีฬา (บรรยายระหว่างการแข่งขัน)
   • Messi was dribbling past three defenders when he scored the winning goal. (เมสซีกำลังเลี้ยงบอลผ่านกองหลังสามคน ตอนที่เขายิงประตูชัย)
   • The Thai team was leading 2-0 when the opponent equalized in the last minute.
5. ข่าวอุบัติเหตุ
   • The driver was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a bus. (คนขับกำลังขับรถด้วยความเร็วสูง ตอนที่เสียการควบคุมและชนรถบัส)
   • Passengers were boarding the plane when the bomb threat was announced.
6. ข่าวเศรษฐกิจและสังคม
   • Investors were watching the stock market nervously as prices began to plunge yesterday morning.
   • Celebrities were arriving at the red carpet when the heavy rain started.
7. ข่าวบันเทิง
   • The actor was filming a new movie in Phuket when the accident happened. (นักแสดงกำลังถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์เรื่องใหม่ที่ภูเก็ต ตอนที่เกิดอุบัติเหตุ)

สรุปPast Continuous Tense ช่วยให้ข่าวและเรื่องราวในอดีตมี “ภาพ” และ “ความต่อเนื่อง” ชัดเจน มักใช้ร่วมกับ Simple Past เพื่อแสดงว่า “ขณะที่กำลังทำอย่างหนึ่งอยู่ อีกอย่างหนึ่งก็เกิดขึ้น”โครงสร้างที่พบบ่อยที่สุดในข่าวคือ:
